Roger Vivier Interview
The Roger Vivier creative director takes us on a guided tour through his whimsical and wonderful Instagram account.
By Britt Burritt
"I love the fact that there is no other footwear brand that has historical value and heritage that equals that of Maison Roger Vivier," enthuses Gherardo Felloni, the house's creative director since March 2018 and only the third since Vivier opened his first boutique in Paris in 1937. His claim is backed by all the fashion icons—from Josephine Baker to Queen Elizabeth II, Cate Blanchett to Céline Dion—who've stepped out in classic Vivier styles.
Felloni is uniquely aware of and equipped to take on the brand's storied history, but he loves to put a playful bent on it: he's tapped legends Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon to star in short films for recent campaigns that include abundant color and camp. "I'm very excited that I can make the maison contemporary," says the Dior and Miu Miu alum. "That I can help continue its legacy in fashion. It is a great honor!"
We've been getting to know the handsome Italian through his exuberant Instagram account (@gherardofelloni), and we asked him to be our guide through some of his favorite photos.
What kind of photos do you most often post to Instagram?
I often simply post photos of what I like to show others about my daily life. I think these photos show what happens to me, but in a very ironic and metaphorical way. Like this photo, which I just instinctively posted.
What is your most recent photo posted?
It is a photo of Susan Sarandon taken by photographer Mehdi Lacoste.
An Instagram photo that's inspiring you now?
This is an Instagram photo by @davi_paris that's inspiring me: a detailed print of a pink leopard, where you can see one eye.
Favorite Instagram with a Roger Vivier shoe?
This Vogue cover with Pamela Anderson wearing a pair of red I Love Vivier pumps. I like the contrast of a woman like Pamela wearing a décolleté but in the middle of rocks. And the expression is very funny!
Last photo you reposted?
The last photo I reposted is this one of Christina Ricci, wearing Roger Vivier, from an editorial we shot in Los Angeles for InStyle magazine.
Most-used emoji in your captions?
I use emojis often; I find it makes a photo immediately fun! Which one do I use often? The heart emoji, like in this photo I posted, which is a message from Ines de la Fressange that I found in my office.
The last person you tagged in a photo?
I recently tagged @tunameltsmyheart, @susansarandon and @annasophiarobb—who are all in Jewels to Shoes—in the same photo. I was in my office in Paris.
Your favorite vacation photo?
My favorite is this photo of a lighthouse, which is my vacation home that I love very much. I took this photo when I finished the restoration this past spring. It was a lot of work that took a very long time—and that's why I love this photo.
A photo of your favorite place?
This is my garden at home in Paris. It's very rare to have a garden in the city, and I love it. It's one of my favorite places because when I was growing up, I was surrounded by nature. So, having such a green space in the middle of Paris always reminds me of my childhood.
A photo of you out?
This is a photo taken with Tuna the dog (@tunameltsmyheart) outside the villa in upstate New York where we shot the film Jewels to Shoes.
Your favorite outfit in a photo?
Here you can see my favorite outfit, a white cotton shirt that I wore with two diamond pins by the famous French jeweler and collector Henri Vever, which date back to the second half of the 19th century. This photo was taken by Bruno Van Mossevelde at my home in Paris.
Your favorite selfie?
My favorite selfie is the one I took with Mademoiselle Yulia, a dear friend of mine from Japan. It was taken during my second press presentation, "Daydream Vivier," where she participated as one of my muses.
